J Dennis (Featured Artist)

J.Dennis is the star of Soulgood’s 1st track & music video directed by Stuey Kubrick, Produced by Vanguard Music & envisioned by Pedro from Soulgood.

Here’s a little about who he is & what he’s up to with a Q&A.

1) Who are you?

My name is JDennis, rapper, athlete & father.

2) Where are you from? Being an American now living in Vancouver, what do you love about this city?

I’m from Palmdale, California. What I like about Vancouver is the love and comfort you get from the vibes of the city mixed in with that westcoast feel that reminds me of Cali.

3) What’s your feelings on the music industry here in Vancouver?

I think the music industry is pretty good here considering the size. You have real music heads out here promoting and pushing the music movement out here, like Pedro and Mike and them Soulgood boys.

4) How did you become a CFL player & how did it feel to win a Grey Cup?

I became a CFL player in 2007 after trying out for the B.C. Lions. Out of 300 players that day I was the only one to leave with a contract, that was a beautiful day. Winning the grey cup was the cherry on a long grind and it’s one mountain i’ll always remember climbing and I have a ring to show for it, I’m very Blessed!

5) Who have you worked with? Any really cool experiences?

I’ve worked with Red1 and DJ Kemo on some records + with Soulgood & Kemo on the beat for the SG Project which has just been released. I started rapping serious after I left football in 2012. I have opened up for artists from Rakim to T.I and from the Alcoholics to Bone Thugs. Everytime i’m on stage it’s special and one thing i’m proud of is playing a CFL game then going straight to the stage! That was special.

6) When you’re not making music what/who do you listen to on the regular?

When i’m not making music I usually try to study and hit old + new whichever genre to get a feel for what’s hot and why.

7) Are there any local artists you really dig?

Local artist doing it now I would say Heatwave is making moves, Tony mason + NWD are making noise & young Raeliss is doing his thing. I think there’s talent out here.

8) How do you get creative to create your music? What’s your routine?

When I make music I get into the beat, hit a joint and let the music move me, then go in. It’s like a snow ball, once I start going down that hill it’s automatic.

9) If you could give any advice to any up-coming artists or even athletes, what would you tell them?

I would say lose yourself in it, ignore any doubts and move with love for the game.

10) You’re now a father of 2, how has that impacted your music & your day to day life?

Having two daughters is the best thing I could ever do. It means I can’t focus so much on me sometimes although they make me focus more on what I need to do to make their lives easier. I’m Blessed.

11) If there was any artist you could collaborate with, who would that be?

If I could collab with someone it would be Kendrick Lamar for several reasons.. He’s from my city, he’s the best and I respect his flow.

12) Where can we find your music?

You can find my music on Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and Youtube all ‘jdennismusic’. + peep the Soulgood Music video right here!
