V1TO (Featured Artist)

Who are you?

I go by v1to. I’m 23 and Hip Hop basically runs in my blood.

Where are you from?

I was born in Chicago and spent most of my younger years moving around there before I moved to Vancouver when I was 15.

What made you get into music? Any local influences?

Hip Hop has basically been part of my life since birth. I came up just listening to whatever was on the radio in Chicago and memorizing a bunch of it. The only local influence I can claim is the city itself. Vancouver basically made me who I am now.

What’s your feelings on the music industry here in Vancouver?

I think there’s a lot of latent talent here that is moving in relative silence. And I get that. Everyone’s working on getting things the way they want. But it keeps people relatively isolated I’d say ’cause I really don’t see a lot of people collabing out here. I think there’s a few artists I’ve heard who are sorta like off-brand Lil Pump’s and I’m hoping that wave doesn’t get too big lol.

Who have you worked with? Any really cool experiences?

Nobody of any real note and it depends on what you mean by cool. Musically? Not a whole bunch of things I’ve experienced yet, but I’m hoping that changes. In life? Yeah… Most of those stories aren’t meant for multiple viewings.

When you’re not making music what/who do you listen to on the regular?

Unless I’m being influenced by someone else, I don’t tend to stray far outside of Hip Hop/ R&B anymore. I’m a big Drake fan, but who isn’t these days. Isaiah Rashad is in my top 5 active artists. Smino is this artist from Chicago/St. Louis that I dig. Basically everything he makes is fire. Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Uzi, Meek Mill, Quentin Miller and Kendrick Lamar are some others.

Are there any local artists you really dig?

There’s this dude who goes by ILLYMINIACHI I think? He’s got a song or two that I really fuck with. And I’ve heard of some kid named McEvoy who’s pretty good too.

How do you get creative to create your music? What’s your routine?

You gotta live, first and foremost! Can’t create without a life to create from. So I just live the life I think I’m supposed to. I tend to wait until I’m at emotional highs and lows before I put words on paper, but that’s when I’ll go hunting for a beat that matches where I’m at and the flows just come from there. Other times I’ll hear a song by an artist that really grabs my attention and my first thought is: “I can probably write a better verse than this” so I just do my own version and throw it in the vault.

If you could give any advice to any up-coming artists, what would you
tell them?

Criticism isn’t your enemy. Don’t be so emotionally attached to your music if you’re gonna show it. Make what gives you pleasure, don’t seek others.

If there was any artist you could collaborate with, who would that be?

Drake’s an obvious one. Beyond that? 2 Chainz, Uzi, Future, Chance the Rapper, Quentin Miller
